Taught Masters Degrees

How you study for a Taught Masters degree will vary depending on your programme of study. The University ensures that each student is fully supported throughout their time at Swansea:

All postgraduate students receive an academic handbook at the start of their studies. The handbook provides useful advice and guidance on a wide range of matters and supports students in the successful completion of their degrees. In addition, each student will benefit from ongoing supervision and support from their department.

How Taught Masters degrees work:

The University offers a range of Taught Masters degrees, including the MA, MSc, MScEcon and MBA. Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates can also be studied in a wide range of subject areas on a full-time or part-time basis.

Taught Masters degrees are modular in structure. Students must normally obtain a total of 180 credits to qualify for the degree. This is made up of modules giving a total of 120 credits in Part One (the taught element) and a further 60 credits in Part Two (the dissertation). Candidates must succesfully complete Part One before being allowed to progress to Part Two.

Taught Masters programmes contain built-in research, methodology skills courses and department-specific training courses, which are essential for studnets both at Masters level or for those wishing to go on to higher degrees. Additional specialised training courses are also available during the academic year.
